I really like John Flannagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" series! It's totally one of my faves! His writing style is so smooth and easy to read, and also very descriptive.

- Book One: It's about a kid named Will who's one of the castle wards. When it starts out, he really wants to become a knight, but he's too short and skinny. On choosing-day (when the different trade masters pick their new apprentices) the Battle Master doesn't accept Will's plea to become an apprentice knight. Instead, Halt, the castle's resident Ranger, decides to take on Will as his new apprentice. The Rangers are a reclusive bunch, and nobody knows much about what they do, but most of the villagers think that they practice black magic. And you'll just have to read the book to find out how it ends!
